I am ORPW, and have been using Dr. Baumann's regimen for one week today. I have had absolutely no problems with the skin care regimen. Today, though, we decided to go to the pool in the afternoon, and I had just purchased some new sunblock for my face:
Neutrogena Healthy Defense Sunblock Oil-Free UVA/UVB SPF 45

The sun protection recommended by Dr. Baumann in the book was only SPF 15, and I wanted something stronger for the pool, beach, etc.

Well, within two minutes of putting on the Neutrogena sunblock, my face started burning and stinging! It felt like a really bad sunburn. It's now 5 hours later, I've washed my face twice and taken a shower, and it's still stinging, though not as badly.

I have never had any problems like this with any product, ever.

I'm wondering if the sunblock could have reacted with something that was already on my face? I had put on makeup at about 10:00 this morning, so it was at least 6 hours prior to the sunblock application. But that's really all I can think of.

My morning regimen this morning:

Neutrogena Oil=Free Acne Wash
Bare Essentials Skin Revver Upper (not on the recommended list by Dr. Baumann, but I'm going to use it up)
Boscia Oil-Free Daily Hydration SPF 15
Bare Minerals Mineral Veil
Bare Minerals Foundation
Bare Minerals Warmth
another application of Bare Minerals Mineral Veil

Any guesses??? I certainly don't want to make this mistake again!!

Thanks for any help.

Hi Ann. Is this the sunscreen you used? Below I put the link to drugstore.com which lists the ingredients.

It could be two things. The avobenzone which stings some people or the benzoic acid which can cause irritation too. The benzoic acid isĀ  far down on the ingredient list so it's hard to say. And the one that you're already using, the Boscia SPF 15, has avobenzone if I remember correctly, but I'm not sure as they have two different sunscreen products with SPF 15.. But I do find that some with avobenzone bother me more than others. The ones with more silicones don't seem to bother me as much.

Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks, Marcy. That is the sunblock that I used ... maybe it was one of the two substances you mentioned. Perhaps the concentrations are higher. I will definitely be on the lookout for those two ingredients in my next sunblock. Maybe in combination with my other regimen, it's just too much.

Thanks!
