Some of the recommended products contain irritating ingredients and her work with Johnson & Johnson casts some doubt on the impartiality of Dr. Baumann's critiques.

Working "with" someone is not the same as working "for" someone. Dr. Baumann isn't even making a profit from the products sold on her website... she donates them to charity.

I can see your skepticism regarding the product recommendations. Some do have some irritating ingredients but I'm thinking that's because there's different subtypes in each category.  Some of the acne washes might irritate someone with redness, etc, yet people with acne and people with redness are  both sensitive types, for example.

I think the best recommendation is to check the overall ingredient list, as different products work for different people too. Pick products with the ingredients to help your subtype. I'm a DSNW/OSNW with acne so some of the DSNW recs have a few pore cloggers in them, but a DSNW without acne would not have a problem with them. I find myself reading labels more to make sure that the no no's are not in there!

I have found the advice to be very helpful to my skin

You really have to read the whole section for your skin type. I'm an OSPW. In the book Dr. Baumann recommends that you also read chapters that are close to your skin type. I read OSPT and got more information. After reading the OSPW chapter I learned that because my problem is more redness/irritation than acne I should avoid Hydroquinone. But that is the main ingredient in many skin lighteners. I tried to use Skin Effects brightening complex because it only had 2% Hydroquinone. But even that was too much. So I had to rely on the ingredient list to find another alternative. And I think I have. I went looking and found Olay Regenerist Targeted Tone Enhancer. The main ingredient in that is Niacinamide. Now it works slower. But it is working. Dr. Baumann literally puts the power to change your skin in your hands .
As for her relationship with skin care manufacturers...she's recommending products from CVS to Nordstrom's. Again she's giving us the power to make our own informed decisions.

OK, some dont use the ones with irritating ingredients. I believe that is the point of her book. She cant be there to guide you but the guidelines/suggestions in her book are just that. Only you can determine what works for you. Did you read the book or just look at suggested products?
