Percutaneous Collagen Induction Therapy: An Alternative Treatment for Scars, Wrinkles, and Skin Laxity is the name of an interesting article in the journal of plastic and reconstructive surgery that I went across this weekend.
The online version that is free only has the abstract .I can’t post the whole article here but this group of doctors claim that this technique is better than lasers. They say:” laser treatments are ablative and tighten the skin or lighten scars because generally they destroy the epidermis and, very importantly, its basement membrane, which is replaced by an epidermis that no longer has dermal papillae and, at least in the beginning, is thinner than before”
The treatment is done with a roll that has needles that are 3-5 mm in large and very thin. There are pictures of the patients and a diagram that shows how the skin is injured and then histological slides that demonstrate a larger layer of collagen after the treatment. They say that by using this technique they stimulate the natural pathway of healing with more natural results than with lasers or dermabrasions.
The studies were done in South Africa and Germany.
The device looks pretty much like an instrument of torture ,but the pictures are amazing. They used patients with large scars from acne and people that wanted to improve wrinkles also.
Maybe someone has heard about this treatments and can add to this.
