Dr. Baumann, could you please elaborate on the safety of chemical sunscreens? 4 years, 10 months ago #2144

I have been reading your yahoo blogs - they are great to read!  I had particular interest with the one regarding sunscreens,  that stated chemical filters are absorbed by the skin and excreted in the urine. It went on to say that physical sunscreens are recommended for pregnant women and children under 5.

I don't want to be overly paranoid, but I am trying to conceive but also tend to get some melasma during pregnancy. I also have two small kids and often use the Neutrogena Cooling Helioplex spray on them and myself because it's so much easier. We live in FL and get a lot of incidental as well as direct sun exposure.

I was thinking of switching to physical suncreens, I just was wondering how their protection compares to that of the stabilized avobenzone and the Mexoryl. I do actually like the feeling of zinc oxide on my skin, it reduces any redness completely!  I just want to make sure we're still getting adequate protection.

So I guess what I'm really asking is if there are significant differences in the protection from chemical vs. physical filters, especially in a place like sunny Florida!

This topic has been discussed to death on makeupalley.com but I really would like your input on this too.

Oh, I do try to wear a visor when I'm outside though, just in case, to give my face more "shade".   I just picked up some more really cute ones at Sports Authority!

Thanks,
Marcy
